oh wow.
my day starts on a beautiful, heartbreaking, hopeful note. i discovered that the english band goldfrapp has released a new song called “annabel,” inspired by the 2010 book of the same name by kathleen winter. the book is about an intersex child who is forced to take on a male identity in 1960s and ’70s canada and later discovers the truth about who he is.
this is the book that sparked my transition. all of the ingredients were there, but this was what allowed my mind to hope, for just a second, that i could do what i’ve wanted to do for years. it gave me the courage to start the process. it’s the most important piece of literature i’ve ever read. it changed my life forever.
i chose one of my two middle names to honour this book and the profound effect it had on me. and now it’s a beautiful song with a gorgeous, stark short film to accompany it. you must watch; the music kicks in at just shy of three minutes.
the last few days have been filled both with beauty and lots of emotion. perhaps this is the icing on the cake.
