i went through the university of minnesota’s center for sexual health. (you can click on the link and see sort of what’s involved.) some of the doctors there pretty much wrote the standards for transgender care, so i’m lucky to live relatively close to that clinic. i first started seeing a therapist there, and then eventually i met with a medical doctor to get on hormones. (if you do this the traditional way, you have to see a therapist before you’re recommended and approved for hormone therapy.)
even though i saw specialists in transgender care, there are many therapists out there who can help you, or make referrals for other care providers who can help. and as for the hormones side of it, any medical doctor can prescribe and monitor them, but it’s best to find someone who is at least familiar with transgender care so you’re sure your needs are being addressed. a therapist can make recommendations for an appropriate doctor.
i’m soon going to transfer my care to duluth, the city where i live, so i don’t have to drive 150 miles to minneapolis every time i need to see someone. i will likely get a referral for a therapist here, and then for either an endocrinologist or a gp here who can monitor my hormones and all my bloodwork and levels and such.
