The 2-Minute Grungy, Smoky Lid

You’re going somewhere nice and you want to transform your look to something a little more glamorous, but you didn’t bring any extra makeup out with you.
Fear not. This is the smoky, easy, slightly-grungy (depending on how much you apply) lid that takes little precision and skill to pull off. A bonus is that it looks better and better over the hours, takes a minute to touch up if necessary, and works EVEN with greasy eye lids.
In fact, it’s so easy to do and requires so little effort that I primarily wore this while I was traveling.
You need just 1 item:
- A soft, smudgy, very-black khol pencil or kajal stick. Chances are, you already own one.

Step 1: Just pack on the black within your lid, not going outwards or up too far. Concentrate the color near the lash line and apply plenty of product.

Step 2: Here’s a simple chart for those of you who get confused about what the crease is and what the socket line is. The crease IS the fold. It’s where your lid folds in and creates a line when you’re looking straight into a mirror. If you have hooded eyes or a mono lid, this crease line might actually be very low and close to your lash line, or even hidden entirely.
The socket line, on the other hand, is always there. If you close your eyes and run your finger over your lid, you’ll feel the curved hollow cupped around the top of your eye ball. That’s your socket line.
Now, using your finger you want to smudge and fade the black pencil up until the SOCKET line. The black should get fainter and fainter as you go upwards. Most of the color will be within the crease.

Step 3: Reinforce your lash line by going over a second time with the pencil, this time in a narrower swatch along the lashes. For an extra sultry and full-lashed effect, run the pencil below the lashes as well, on the inner rim of your lids.
Then use your finger to lightly smudge that obvious line again.

Step 4: Finish by curling lashes and applying mascara.
Note of caution: Do not blend the pencil out and down too far as it can create the look of droopy eyes. Imagine a line going from your bottom lash line up towards the end of your brow.You want to make sure the pencil doesn’t smudge past that line.
—As the day passes, your lid may get greasy or the black pencil may fade. If it creases, just use your finger to lightly tap and press around the crease. If you need, repeat Step 3 to intensify and refresh the color over the day.If you keep it light-handed, it’s actually a nice neutral smoky look; NOT goth of overly dramatic.
